Iowa Biodiesel Board Praises State Fuel Marketers for Inspirational Change
January 22, 2019
(ANKENY, IOWA) – The Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa (PMCI) has changed its name to FUELIowa, a move applauded by the Iowa Biodiesel Board. The new name better represents its members and the variety of fuels they provide to Iowans, according to the organization, including biofuels like biodiesel. Grant Kimberley, executive director of IBB, issued the following statement:
“We applaud FUELIowa on this truly groundbreaking, progressive change. Renaming the organization is quite significant, reflecting the evolution and diversification of our fuel supply in Iowa and nationwide. For a petroleum marketer group that has existed since 1937 to embark on such a rebranding effort to include more fuels like biodiesel is inspiring.
“We thank FUELIowa, under the leadership of Dawn Carlson, for their strong support of biodiesel. This state marketers’ group became one of the first in the nation to embrace biodiesel, and has been a member of the Iowa Biodiesel Board since the early days of the organization. Their legislative support of state and federal policies that help their members, biodiesel producers and Iowa’s farmers alike has truly made a difference in Iowa’s national leadership of biodiesel production.
“Iowa biodiesel supports thousands of jobs in the state, and helps lessen the blow of hard economic times for our farmers. FUELIowa’s new name speaks to what fuel marketers do every day – fuel Iowa's economy.”
Early estimates show that in 2018, Iowa’s biodiesel plants produced more than 350 million gallons of biodiesel – a record.
Kimberley noted federal programs like the Renewable Fuel Standard have driven biodiesel’s success nationwide, but the states with the strongest policies, like Iowa, help determine who plays the biggest role in production, and capture the resulting economic benefits.
Biodiesel is an advanced biofuel made from agricultural byproducts and co-products, such as soybean oil. The Iowa Biodiesel Board is a state trade association representing the biodiesel industry.
