Tens of thousands of acres of Mid-Iowa farmland are planted with corn and soybeans in alternate years, the corn extracting nitrogen from the soil one season, the soybeans replenishing it the next.
According to the state Secretary of Agriculture’s office, Iowa’s corn-and-soy-dominated ag economy earned $20 billion last year, up from $12 billion in 2002.
Soy-based biodiesel fuel is one of the reasons that happened, according to rural Story City resident Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board.

ICCC home to nation’s first BQ-9000 lab
Fort Dodge Messenger, Aug. 7, 2010
It's no secret that Iowa is a leader in the production of biofuels.
Now, Iowa Central Community College has earned a new title for the state - home of the nation's first BQ-9000 accredited fuel testing lab.
BQ-9000 is a voluntary quality assurance program overseen by the independent National Biodiesel Accreditation Commission that sets up a standardization process to test biodiesel and biodiesel blends.
"This is just one more example of how Iowa is leading the nation in biodiesel and other renewable fuels," said Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board. "It provides Iowa Central an opportunity, not just to assist in the fuel distribution system in Iowa, but I know they also hope to reach out to regulators on a national level and develop a reputation as a biofuel- and even petroleum-fuel testing facility. We're anxious for the lab to grow and assist the marketplace."

US House passes biodiesel tax extension; moves to Senate June 7th
BiofuelsDigest, May 28, 2010
Today, the House of Representatives passed the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act, which includes the biodiesel tax credit extension, retroactive to January 1, 2010, and expiring December 31, 2010.
Randy Olson, IBB executive director, commended the House and urged quick action from the Senate on the bill when it returns from the Memorial Day break.
“During a time when we are so vividly reminded of the consequences of our addiction to oil, it‚s tragic that we are letting our biodiesel refineries die,” Olson said. “Biodiesel is one of the few tangible opportunities our nation has to produce its own renewable, biodegradable fuel. But we are watching it slip through our fingers.”

Still a believer in biodiesel, despite loss of plant
Des Moines Register, March 3, 2010
"I’m telling this story because despite the hardship for my family, the investors, my town and the former employees, I still believe in biodiesel. I still believe that taking control of our energy future can make us a more secure, greener, prosperous nation. I’m hoping that Iowa legislators and Congressional leaders step up and do the right thing for Iowa and our country."
