Government Relations

A founding member of Dickey & Campbell Law Firm in Des Moines, Gary Dickey has been licensed to practice law in Iowa since 2002.  After serving a federal clerkship for Honorable Harold Vietor, he joined the office of Governor Tom Vilsack and Lt. Governor Sally Pederson as general counsel in October of 2004.

While with the Governor’s Office, Dickey crafted Executive Order No. 42, which restored the right to vote in Iowa for tens of thousands of ex-felons that had already completed their sentences.  He successfully represented Governor Vilsack in court in defense of the executive order.  He also served as an ex-officio member of the legislative Administrative Rules Review Committee.  In September 2005, Dickey assumed the additional responsibilities as policy director, serving as Governor Vilsack’s chief representative on legislative and budget issues.

In January 2007, he joined the Iowa Department of Economic Development where he served as a Division Administrator, coordinating its commercialization efforts in advanced manufacturing, biosciences, and information technology.  As a registered lobbyist for the department, Dickey drafted HF829 and helped the Governor’s Office with the passage of the Iowa Energy Independence Act.

Dickey has served as an Iowa Biodiesel Board government affairs representative since 2008.
